英語ニュースで英語学習：the likes of which
2022年9月15日のCBS Evening Newsで"the likes of which"という表現を学びました。
アメリカのトランプ元大統領が、政府の機密文書をフロリダの邸宅に持ち出していた問題に関するニュースです。この件が起訴されたら(indicted)、大きな問題が起こるぞ、とトランプ元大統領が述べたと報道しています。
Former President Trump says, he, quote, “can’t imagine being indicted” over his handling of classified documents after leaving office. And he warned of unrest if charges were brought.
“I think you’d have problems in this country, the likes of which perhaps we’ve never seen before.”
likeは「～を好む」という意味で最もよく使われる動詞ですが、ここではlikesと名詞化して「同類のもの」という意味で使われています。今回のように"the likes of which"としてイディオム的に使用されることが多く「（which以下の）ようなもの（と同類のもの）」という意味になります。
この文ではthe likesは前にある"problems"の言い換えとして使われていて、「私たちがおそらく今までに見たことのないような問題がこの国で起こるだろうと思う」と訳せます。
the likes of で前に出てきている名詞を受けているので、関係代名詞の少し形を変えたバージョンともいえるかなと思いました。
英語ニュースで英語学習：in shambles
2022年9月13日のCBS Evening Newsで"in shambles"という表現を学びました。
今年の初めにツイッター社に解雇された方が、whistleblowerとしてツイッター社のサイバーセキュリティ―対策には深刻な問題があると内部告発しました。以下このニュースの冒頭部分です。
Twitter’s former security chief, Peiter Zatko, today claimed the company cybersecurity system is in shambles.
”shambles"というのは「畜殺場、修羅場」などの意味があります。そして、"in shambles"で「めちゃくちゃ（な状態）で、最悪（な状態）で、カオス状態で」という意味になります。
つまり、「ツイッター社の元セキュリティ責任者のピーターザトコ氏が今日、ツイッター社のサイバーセキュリティ―システムはめちゃくちゃな状態だと告発した。」となります。
英語ニュースで英語学習：avid
2022年9月9日のCBS Evening Newsで"avid"という表現を学びました。
9月8にイギリスのエリザベス女王が崩御されたことを受け、エリザベス女王がいかに芸術がお好きだったかをレポートしたものです。
During her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth was an avid supporter and patron of the arts. She made a tremendous impact on some of the world's biggest stars. Some of them are now paying tribute to her.
avidとは「熱心な、熱烈な」という意味があり、ここではavid supporterで「熱心な支持者」という意味で使われています。keen, eager, enthusiasticと同義の単語です。
和訳：70年間の統治の間、エリザベス女王は芸術の熱心な支持者でありパトロンでした。彼女から多大な影響を受けた世界的なスターもいます。彼らは今エリザベス女王に敬意を表しています。
仁淀ブルーへのアクセス／Access to Niyodo Blue

先日２泊３日で高知県へ旅行へ行って来ました。
旅の大きな目的の一つは、安居渓谷の仁淀ブルーを見ることです。
高知市内から安居渓谷まで結構時間がかかるので、２日目の早朝に高知駅を出発して向かいました。
安居渓谷までのアクセスはかなり限られています。個人で交通機関を使って行く場合、以下のルートが一般的のようです。
①高知駅からJRで佐川（さかわ）駅まで行く
私たちが利用したのは、JR土佐線（高知駅発ー須崎行）の朝7:10発の電車です。
２両編成の電車でした。平日の朝でしたが、乗車しているのはほとんどが中高生と思われる生徒たちで、それなりに混んでいましたが都会の通勤ラッシュのようなものはありませんでした。
電車はゆっくりと途中長めに停車しながら進みます。のどかな景色が続き、電車の窓も20~30㎝くらい開けることができて、古き良き日本の原風景に触れることができます。
②佐川駅から黒岩観光バスで狩山口まで行く
佐川駅に着いて、出口を左手に行くと、黒岩観光バスの乗り場があります。電車が到着してから結構待ちます（※乗り継ぎが悪いので注意しましょう）。私たちは、8:50発の狩山口行に乗りました。
ちなみに、佐川駅周辺はカフェなどもあるのですが、開店時間がお昼以降などのところが多いです。コンビニも周辺にありません。
③狩山口からタクシーで宝来荘まで行く
狩山口のバス停からはタクシーで行きました。事前に手配したほうがいいです。ちなみに、いくつかタクシー会社はありますが、私たちは『池川交通ハイヤー合資会社(tel: 0889342450)』を利用しました。
上記の狩山口でタクシーに乗り換える方法と、ふれあい橋（狩山口の１つ手前のバス停）で降りてタクシーに乗り換える方法とがあります。
今回、帰りはふれあい橋までタクシーに乗って、そこからバスで佐川駅まで戻りましたが、ふれあい橋の目の前にお土産屋さんとレストランが併設されている小さなお店があります。Googleで検索しても出てこないのですが（※そのため開店時刻や営業日は不明です）、行きにここで降りてちょっとした食べ物を買って渓谷へ行くこともできたな、と思いました。
宝来荘というのは、レストランが併設されている宿泊施設です。
宝来荘の前で降りてから山の方へ歩くと次々と美しい景色が目の前に広がります。
高知駅からここまで辿り着くのに苦労しますが、来てよかったと思えます✨
車で来られる方も多いようですが、道は典型的な細い山道（車がすれ違うことができる道幅がない場所が多いので、対向車が道幅が広い場所で待機することもよく起こります）でガードレールがない場所もありました。山道に不慣れな方は交通機関を利用することをお勧めします！
昼食は宝来荘で食べましたが、予約をしていった方が良かったです。男性が一人で切り盛りされているので、繁忙期など予約なしで行くと食べられない可能性があります。
When you are planning to go to Yasui valley to see Niyodo Blue, there are mainly two ways to get there; by car or by using public transportation. I want to explain how I got there using public transportation from JR Kochi station.
There are 3 steps to get to Yasui valley.
1) From JR Kochi station to JR Sakawa station.
2) From JR Sakawa station to Kariyamaguchi bus stop by Kuroiwa Kanko bus.
3) From Kariyamaguchi bus stop to Horaiso by taxi.
1) From JR Kochi station to JR Sakawa station.
Sakawa station is on JR Tosa Line. There are only a few trains from Kochi to Sakawa (about 1 to 3 trains per hour). We took a train departing at 7:10, and a bit crowded with students. It will take approximately an hour to get to Sakawa station.
2) From JR Sakawa station to Kariyamaguchi bus stop by Kuroiwa Kanko bus.
On the left side of the exit of JR Sakawa station, you can find a bus stop of Kuroiwa Kanko bus. Connections between trains and buses are very bad, so you need to wait for the bus to depart the bus stop. There are cafes near the station, but most of them open at around noon, and there is no convenience store nearby.
3) From Kariyamaguchi bus stop to Horaiso by taxi.
The final stop of the bus is Kariyamaguchi. From Kariyamaguchi to Horaiso, we took a taxi which we booked two days before. Unfortunately, there is no public transportation service which brings us to Yashui valley from Kariyamaguchi, so I recommend you to book a cab. It's better to book beforehand because the place is countryside, and it might take time for a taxi to arrive at Kariyamaguchi bus stop. There are a few taxi companies, and the one we used was "Ikegawa Transportation Hire L.P.(tel: 0889342450)." The driver is very friendly person, but not sure if he understands English or not.
On the way back to Sakawa station, the taxi driver kindly taught us that there is a small shop in front of the Fureaibashi bus stop (one stop before the Kariyamaguchi), so we asked him to drop us off at the stop. At the shop, you can buy snacks or some beverages. There is also a restaurant next to the shop. So when you go to the valley, you can get off at Fureaibashi and buy something to eat or eat there, then take a cab to Horaiso (which we could not do this time since we did not know about this place). But, the Google does not recognize the place, so there is no info when the shop opens or what the name of the shop is.
Horaiso (https://yasuikeikoku-horaisou.com/ ) is an inn with restaurant which is also open to non-guests (It's better to book beforehand if you want to dine here). Getting off in front of Horaiso is the best to get to Niyodo Blue by walk. From there, you start hiking along the Niyodo river, and in a few minutes, you will find fascinating views of Niyodo Blue!
英語ニュースで英語学習：parched land
2022年9月6日のCBS evening newsから"parched”という表現を学びました。
このニュースではカリフォルニアで起こっている火事の被害について報告がなされています。カリフォルニアでは連日以上に高い気温が続いていて、それに伴って火災が発生し、被害が出ているようです。以下、"parched”が使われていた個所です。
It's what firefighters fear the most: Record-setting heat, parched land, and wildfires exploding in size.
parchedはparch「（熱などが）〈地面などを〉乾き切らす」という意味の動詞を形容詞化したものです。parchedで「乾ききった」という意味になり、parched landで「乾ききった土地」つまり、「乾燥し切った地面」という意味で使われています。dryよりも「熱によって乾ききった」というニュアンスを表したいときに使うようです。
和訳：消防士が最も恐れるのは、これまでの記録を超える高温、乾き切った地面、そして爆発的に広がる山火事だ。
英語ニュースで英語学習：pocketbook concerns
2022年9月1日のCBS Evening Newsで"pocketbook concern"という表現を学びました。
ニュースは、アメリカの学校での教員不足に対する対策についてでした。
アメリカでは住む場所の賃貸料金が急激に上昇していて、教員の給料では賃料が払えず教員を続けられない現状がまずあるそうです。そこで、学校側が教員が住めるアパートを建設し、そこに先生に住んでもらって賃料を節約し教員を続けてもらう、という試みの紹介でした。そのなかで、pocketbook concernという表現が使われていました。
Principal Megan Carey says there have always been pocketbook concerns.
"We had teacher who was delivering pizzas."
pocketbookとは、「小型の手帳」や「文庫本」という意味ですが、ここでは「財源、財力、資力」などの「お金」を意味する表現として使われています。
concernは「心配事」などの意味ですので、pocketbook concernsで「お金の心配」という意味になります。
メーガン校長先生は、「いつもお金の心配があるんです。ピザのデリバリーをしながら教員をしている人もいました」と言っています。（アメリカではピザのデリバリーでもらえる給料の方が教員としてもらえる給料より高い地域もあるそうです）

京都で泊まった3000円代のコスパ最強ホテルを紹介したいと思います。

〇良かった点
まず、2022年3月18日オープンで新しくとても清潔です。部屋もとても静かです。アメニティーはロビーで受け取り式で、化粧水や乳液、紅茶などが選べます（ただし一人１個など制限があります）。チェックインは自動ですが、スタッフの方が手伝ってくれます。
〇残念だった点
駅から少し遠いです。京阪清水五条駅から、最低でも5分は歩く必要があります。部屋の窓が自由に開けられないので、窓を開けて換気をすることができませんでした。あと、ホテルとは分かりにくい外観なので、気をつけましょう。

〇Pros
This hotel was opened on March, 18th 2022, so it's very new and clean. The place is very quiet. The hotel offers various room amenities such as face lotion, face mask, tea bags, and so forth for free (※one each per person). Check-in process is automatized, but staff help you proceed.
〇Cons
The location is a little bit far from Keihan Kiyomizu-Gojo station, so you need to walk at least for 5 min to get there. Room window is locked and you are not allowed to open it, so it's impossible to ventilate a room by opening the window. Since this hotel’s exterior is not a typical hotel, it's a bit difficult to find.
